Anansi Spiders & Huckleberry Finns Classes
Curriculum for Autumn Term 1
For the first two weeks of the new school term we will be exploring ‘living things,’ in particular caterpillars and their transformation into butterflies.
Topic vocabulary to understand and use: caterpillar, butterfly, butterflies, cocoon, insect, molting, chrysalis, eggs, shed, larva, colourful
As Readers and writers we will be reading the story of ‘The Hungry Caterpillar.’ We will sequence the story and use Pie Corbett’s talk for writing to retell the story using actions. We will then complete our very own story map and use this to help us retell the story to our peers. We will recap important Grammar terms, learnt last year, including the use of capital letters and full stops in the correct places. We will use ‘ninja punctuation,’ and use this when reading aloud. This will help us to remember to use capital letters and full stops in our writing!
During week 2, we will be creating our very own ‘kenning poem’ about butterflies. We will read non – fiction books as a class to find out as much information about butterflies as possible.
As Mathematicians we will be spending the first few weeks, recapping and mastering place value. We will practise counting from 0 – 100 and back again, starting from any given number. We will begin to recognise numbers written as words and match these to their digits. We will be also mastering what ‘10’s and 1’s’ are and show our understanding of this through partitioning 2 digit numbers.
As Scientists we will learn about living things. We will spend time researching what a living thing is and use our school environment to explore the different living things that live in our school grounds. We will initially focus on caterpillars and butterflies, looking at their lifecycle and why this is important. We will look at the different things that all living things do and demonstrate our understanding of these using butterflies through ‘MRS GREN.’
PE Children will have 2 hours of PE per week. Lessons will take place on Monday and Tuesday afternoon. Children must have a full PE kit in school. Please ensure all items, including footwear is named!
